HI-TECH C Compiler for PIC18 MCUs v9.64 Release Candidate
      #138462 - Thu Dec 10 2009 09:49 PM

HI-TECH C Compiler for PIC18 MCUs v9.64 Release Candidate

This is a special version of the HI-TECH C Compiler for PIC18 MCUs that is being made available only in release candidate form. Its purpose is to provide new device support(2) and give customers an indication of the future direction of the compiler. The compiler has been developed from the same code base as 9.63PL4(1) so in many respects they are both quite similar. The key differences between the two are as follows.

New Device Support(2):

New device support has been discontinued in version 9.63PL4(1). Any new device not presently supported by 9.63PL4(1) has been (or will be) added to version 9.64. Version 9.63PL4(1) will continue to be maintained (i.e. bug fixes) but no new device support will be added. For a list of the new devices supported by 9.64 please refer to the release notes of the same or the footnotes at the bottom of this post.

MPLAB C18 Compiler Support:

The bulk of the differences between 9.64 and 9.63PL4(1) lie here. Several new features have been added to the compiler to improve code compatibility between it and the MPLAB C18 compiler. Some of these new features replace others in 9.63PL4(1) and therefore users should be aware of the details of the changes. The details can be found in the compiler release notes and manual. The key new features are as follows:
  • Header File Support

    All device specific C header files have been replaced with those used by the MPLAB C18 compiler. No alterations have been made to these header files to ensure compatibility with the HI-TECH compiler. Rather the HI-TECH compiler now supports the syntax and semantics contained in these headers. As always using #include <htc.h> will automatically provide the correct device specific header file.

  • Configuration Register Programming

    The macro function __CONFIG is no longer available. Any attempt to use this function will result in a warning. To program configuration registers consider using the compiler directive #pragma config or the macro function __PROG_CONFIG.

    The compiler directive #pragma config is used and functions in exactly the same manner as it does in the MPLAB C18 compiler. Refer to the manual for more details on its syntax. All settings available to this directive are documented in HTML supplied with the compiler. Simply open the HTML file "docs/configset/index.html" located in the compiler's installation directory with your browser. This documentation is the same as that provided in the MPLAB help topics.

    The macro function __PROG_CONFIG (defined in pic18.h) can be used to program a literal value into a configuration register. For details on this function please refer to the compiler manual.

  • MPASM Support

    All device specific assembly include files have been replaced with those used by the MPLAB MPASM assembler. No alterations have been made to these files to ensure compatibility with the HI-TECH assembler. Rather the HI-TECH assembler now supports the syntax and semantics contained in these files. In order to effect this support all assembly files must be preprocessed, i.e. the driver option -P must be used. Including pic18.inc will automatically provide the correct device specific include file.

Documentation

The changes and new features listed above should not be considered a complete list. Please refer to the compiler release notes and manual. They are available in PDF format as a separate download below.

Hi, first I would like to thank for your post. =)
I have installed this version as 45days demo but was unable to be detected in the HI-TIDE 3.15PL2. During the installation I have ticked the "add to environment".

By the way, does this version has the information for PIC18F25J11 using the C-Wiz?

Thank you. =)

I spent lot of time preparing project to compile with new C18-style header files and compiling my working project with picc18 v9.64.

There is bunch of errors, as usual (project compiles with GCC and picc18 v9.51pl2 without any warnings...):

Quote:

Below I examined every single error separatelly:

Error [712] X:\pic\malloc.c; 352. can't generate code for this expression
Error [712] X:\pic\malloc.c; 449. can't generate code for this expression

The expressions is like this:

fpnew->sz += fp1->sz + NONX;

Error [712] X:\time.c; 398. can't generate code for this expression

The code is:
Code:

int STIME(const time_t *t)
{
if (t==NULL) {
/*errno=EFAULT;*/
return -1;
}
if (*t!=0) stime_callback(t);
c_time=*t;
return 0;
}

Error [712] X:\pic\qsort.c; 42. can't generate code for this expression

The code is: if (compar(a, b)<=0) break;

Error [712] X:\gsmclock.c; 171. can't generate code for this expression

Error [712] X:\gsmclock.c; 172. can't generate code for this expression

The code is (both lines give an error):
Code:

/* fix year = 70..138 and month */
if (tm->tm_year < 70) tm->tm_year+=100;
tm->tm_mon--;

Error [712] X:\sms.c; 401. can't generate code for this expression

The code is: if (sendsms->amount > 1) sendsms->sms_submit[0] |= TP_UDHI;

Error [712] X:\sms_reply.c; 1548. can't generate code for this expression

The code is:
Code:

r=conf_param[i].func(&utf8[r]);

Multiple warnings "constant conditional branch" related to
for() cycles, like this one:
Code:

for (n=0; n if (alert_hist[n].sms==1) alert_hist[n].sms=0;
}

And I have more idiotic examples of error messages "can't generate code..." from "PRO" version of compiler(s), in one case expression was: x=f(); -- how I can simplify that code???

My resume is -- "PRO" version IS NOT USABLE AT ALL.
I'm using "STD" version (9.51pl2) now. No one of "PRO" version can't compile my projects, because of "can't generate code..."
